Visions of scientific consciousness created with precious metal.

- A classical method given new light -

Hi, I’m Phil Karnezis: Artist | Fencer | Designer:

I'm an artist that specializes in Metal-Point drawing of what some have described as figurative visions of scientific consciousness. As a designer, and fencer, I like to take what is considered the classical; and approach it with regard to modern sensibilities. I'm doing the same for my art.

By definition, metal point, is an artists tool, and a technique, descending from the ancient stylus, an ancestor of the modern pencil. The stylus is fitted with small sharpened metal rods, more commonly of silver, which have been used to create images of elegant detail and beauty.

My compositions are drawn upon specially prepared supports. In my case: gesso board, wood, or aluminum panels. A special ground is applied to them that allow the metal rods to leave a mark. My grounds are pigmented with natural materials; and minerals like: roman ash , bone ash, cobalt, and various metal oxides. Traditional metal-point is often only executed with silver, on a light gesso ground. The markings upon that ground appear as grey; like fine pencil lines, unless shown upon by a point source light. More recently, I have developed a new formula for a dark ground that allows the natural: color,luster and specularity of the precious metals I use, specifically: pure silver, platinum, aluminum, copper, bronze, and various karats of gold , to be visible in natural light. The different metals used to draw all have particular qualities that I employ to build tone and volume.
